The Gap Three Methods are a family of trend-continuation patterns from Japanese candlestick analysis, built from 5 candles. The core idea: in a strong trend, price first gaps to accelerate, then enters a brief pause (three small "method" candles), but the pause never fills the gap, and finally a fifth long-bodied candle pushes again in the original direction, signaling continuation.
There are two variants. The upward version is the Upside Gap Three Methods, a bullish continuation signal; the downward version is the Downside Gap Three Methods, a bearish continuation signal. On Binance Futures (USDⓈ-M perpetuals), with two-way positions and leverage, both translate into clear long or short opportunities.
For futures traders the value is this: the gap reflects a sharp supply-demand imbalance, and the unfilled nature of the three small candles proves the pullback lacks the strength to reverse the trend. As a result the pattern usually offers a better win rate and reward-to-risk profile than blind reversal guessing. It is a trend-following tool, best used to find add-on or with-trend entries during a trending market, not to call tops and bottoms.
This pattern appears in a clear uptrend, with the standard structure:
Logic: the gap shows buyers rushing in; the small pullback is short-term profit-taking, but sellers cannot drag price back into the gap, proving the bullish base is solid. The fifth high-volume candle means fresh money is stepping in and the trend most likely continues up. For Binance Futures longs, this is a directional, risk-controlled with-trend add-on signal.
The mirror image, appearing in a clear downtrend:
Logic: the gap down shows heavy selling; the small bounce is just short-covering and dip-buyers fighting briefly, and once the bounce fails to fill the gap, the fifth high-volume bearish candle triggers another leg down. On Binance Futures this is a high-quality trend-following short signal, appearing more often in bear markets or fast sell-offs.
Turn these five points into a mental checklist and run through it before every entry to avoid being misled by similar but unqualified setups.
Going long (Upside Gap Three Methods):
Going short (Downside Gap Three Methods): fully mirrored — enter when the fifth candle breaks the prior low, stop above the gap, target by reward-to-risk or projected leg.
Leverage and sizing: always control leverage on futures; keep risk per trade to 1%-2% of the account. No matter how clean the pattern looks, protect it with a stop, and the higher the leverage the more strictly the stop must be enforced. Use the built-in take-profit/stop-loss order on the Binance Futures order panel to avoid manual errors.
Suppose BTCUSDT perpetual is in an uptrend on the 4H frame: it prints a +3% long bullish candle (Candle 1), the next candle gaps up and closes bullish (Candle 2), then three small candles consolidate near the highs with their lows never touching the gap (Candles 3-4 plus one consolidation candle). When the fifth long bullish candle breaks the top of the consolidation on volume, the Upside Gap Three Methods is confirmed. Enter long at the breakout, place the stop at the lower edge of the gap (about -1.5%), set the target at 1:3 reward-to-risk, and ride the continuation to target.
Reverse case: ETHUSDT in a downtrend gaps down, three small candles bounce but never fill the gap, and the fifth long bearish candle breaks the prior low — a textbook Downside Gap Three Methods for a with-trend short, with the stop above the gap and the target at the projected extension of the prior leg.
Both are bullish continuation patterns, but the Upside Gap Three Methods requires an upward gap between candles 1 and 2 that the middle small candles must not fill. The Rising Three Methods has no gap requirement; it only needs the small candles to consolidate within the range of the first long bullish candle.
Pure gaps are rarer, but they still appear during violent moves, contract settlements or major news. In practice you can relax the definition to adjacent candles showing almost no overlap during a strong jump or drop.
No. An unfilled gap is the core condition of the Gap Three Methods. Once the middle candles completely fill the gap, treat the pattern as failed and step aside.
Identify the pattern and trend on larger frames such as 4H or 1D, then fine-tune entries on 15m/1H. Multi-timeframe alignment meaningfully improves the win rate.
The pattern itself does not set leverage. Keep risk per trade to 1%-2% of your account, use low leverage as a beginner (e.g. 3x-5x), always protect with a stop, and never go all-in.
