The Side-by-Side White Lines and Side-by-Side Black Lines are three-candle continuation patterns in Japanese candlestick analysis. Unlike reversal patterns (engulfing, head & shoulders), they signal that the existing trend will resume after a brief pause, making them valuable tools for identifying trend acceleration phases on Binance Futures.
Introduced by candlestick authority Steve Nison in Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques, these patterns appear regularly on the 4-hour and daily charts of BTC, ETH, BNB, and other major crypto perpetual contracts.
Appears in an uptrend: First candle β a large-bodied bullish candle. Then a gap up β the second candle opens above the first candle's high. Second and third candles β two bullish candles of similar size with nearly the same open price, both sitting above the gap without filling it.
Appears in a downtrend: First candle β large-bodied bearish candle. Gap down. Two side-by-side bearish candles with similar sizes and open prices, not filling the gap upward.
The strength comes from dual confirmation: the gap proves a sudden burst of directional momentum; the two side-by-side candles maintaining the gap proves that opposing forces cannot push back. Together they form a high-probability continuation signal.
vs. Tasuki Gap: Tasuki's third candle is opposite color and tries to fill the gap. Side-by-Side: both side candles are same color and don't fill the gap.
vs. Rising Three Methods: Three Methods has three small opposing candles in the middle. Side-by-Side has only two same-direction candles.
vs. Two ordinary bullish candles: Side-by-Side White Lines requires a gap and near-identical open prices on the two side candles.
An upside gap marks a sudden burst of buying pressure β triggered by positive news, institutional buying, short-squeeze, or a technical breakout. The two side-by-side white lines that follow reveal: buyers are willing to hold at higher prices (no heavy profit-taking); sellers have failed twice to push price down; the gap zone has become solid support; bullish energy is coiling for the next leg up.
For the Black Lines pattern: the downside gap signals panic selling or concentrated short activity. Two side-by-side black lines show that bottom-fishers have been repelled twice and bears remain firmly in control, pointing to trend acceleration lower.
The statistical significance of "side-by-side": two candles opening at nearly the same price consecutively is not random. It reflects repeated directional conviction at the same price level. Historical backtests suggest a 55-65% win rate when confirmed by trend and volume on 4H+ charts.
BTCUSDT Perpetual β β β β β (highest liquidity, fewest false signals). ETHUSDT Perpetual β β β β β (clear trend behavior). BNBUSDT Perpetual β β β β β (platform-driven momentum). SOLUSDT / XRPUSDT β β β ββ (require extra confirmation).
Daily (1D) β β β β β β strongest signals, ideal for swing traders. 4H β β β β β β highly recommended, balances quality and frequency. 1H β β β ββ β usable for short-term, needs extra confirmation. 15M and below β β βββ β high noise, not recommended standalone.
Entry: Aggressive β market order at close of second side candle. Moderate (recommended) β buy-stop just above the second side candle's high. Conservative β limit order at midpoint of the two side candles on a pullback.
Stop-Loss: Standard (recommended) β 1% below the gap (first candle's high). Tight β just below the lows of the side candles. Wide β below the first candle's body midpoint. Rule: if the gap is fully filled, exit immediately β pattern is invalid.
Targets: T1 = pattern height x1 (exit 40-50% of position; move stop to breakeven). T2 = nearest resistance or prior high (exit 30%). T3 = pattern height x2 or trailing stop (hold remaining 20%).
Position Sizing: Position size (USDT) = Account Γ Risk % (1-2%) Γ· Stop distance %. Example: $10,000 account, 1% risk, 2% stop β $5,000 nominal position. Use 3-10x leverage.
Entry: Aggressive β short at close of second side candle. Moderate (recommended) β sell-stop below the second side candle's low. Stop-loss: 1-2% above the gap (first candle's low). Targets: T1 = height x1 (40-50%), T2 = nearest support (30%), T3 = trailing stop (20%).
Exit immediately if: gap filled >50%; strong opposing candle appears; volume surges against position direction; trend reverses market-wide; 5+ candles pass after pattern with no breakout.
Moving Averages: White Lines above EMA20/50 β β β β β . Breaking above EMA200 = extremely strong signal. Avoid when MAs are tangled/flat.
RSI: White Lines + RSI 50-70 (ideal long setup). Black Lines + RSI 30-50 (ideal short setup). RSI >80 with White Lines = caution (overextension risk). RSI divergence = reduce position size.
MACD: MACD golden cross + White Lines = high-probability long. MACD histogram expanding + White Lines = strong momentum confirmation.
Support/Resistance: White Lines after breakout of major resistance = double confirmation, extremely reliable. Black Lines after breakdown of major support = strong short confirmation.
Context: BTC breaks key resistance with a gap-up, then forms Side-by-Side White Lines. Volume at gap = 2x average. RSI = 65. EMA20 supporting below. MACD golden cross in place. Action: long at close of second side candle, stop below gap, T1 = height x1, T2 = prior high. Result: price rallied strongly within 1 candle, T1 hit (+6%), remaining position trailed to T2 (+10% additional). Four confirmations = high-probability trade.
Context: ETH breaks major support with gap-down, Black Lines form. MACD diverging, RSI = 45. Short at second side candle close, stop above gap. Result: price continued lower, total gain ~14% with partial profit-taking.
Context: Suspected White Lines in a ranging/sideways market, EMA20 flat (no trend), gap volume not elevated. Result: brief rise then gap filled and price reversed sharply. Lesson: continuation patterns require trending context; unconfirmed volume = low reliability; execute stop-loss without hesitation when triggered.
Side-by-Side White Lines (3 candles, gap required, moderate reliability) vs Rising Three Methods (5 candles, gap optional, high reliability, 3 small opposing candles in middle) vs Tasuki Gap (3 candles, gap required, moderate-high reliability, third candle tries to fill gap) vs Mat Hold (5 candles, gap required, high reliability, more complex structure).
