Almost every Binance perpetual trader has had the same "how the hell did I just liquidate" moment. The account still showed a balance, but the margin ratio silently crawled to 100% and the engine took the position. The cause is rarely luck. It is almost always a misunderstanding of two numbers: Margin Ratio and Maintenance Margin (MMR). This guide walks through the exact 2026 formulas, a worked example with Binance's current BTCUSDT tier table, isolated vs cross differences, liquidation mechanics, and seven practical rules that keep a book alive.

Margin Ratio is Binance's single most important health metric for a position. It answers one question: "how much more loss can this account absorb before it gets wiped?"
Official formula:
Margin Ratio = Maintenance Margin / Account Equity x 100%
Expect these zones:
Remember: lower is safer. Unlike "account usage" in some brokers, here 100% is the death line, not the full picture.
Maintenance Margin (MM) is the minimum USDT amount you must keep to hold an open position. It is not the same as Initial Margin (IM), which is what you locked when you opened:
The 460 USDT gap between IM and MM is exactly the loss buffer the exchange allows you before pulling the plug.
MM is the numerator (fixed to notional), Equity is the denominator (moves with PnL).
Larger size pushes the numerator up; losses pull the denominator down. Both directions lift the ratio.
This is why oversized + high-leverage positions die so fast. Both sides of the fraction are working against you at the same time.
Notional = Contracts × Multiplier × Mark Price
MM = Notional × MMR − Maintenance Amount
Account Equity = Wallet Balance + Unrealized PnL
Margin Ratio = MM / Equity × 100%
Setup:
BTC drops from 60,000 to 57,000 (−5%). Loss = 0.3 × 3,000 = 900 USDT.
Another 1% drop (57,000 → 56,430) and you are past 100%. Liquidation triggers around mark price 56,760 (with fee buffer).
Long liq price ≈ Entry × (1 − 1/Leverage + MMR)
Short liq price ≈ Entry × (1 + 1/Leverage − MMR)
At 20x and MMR 0.4%: long liq ≈ entry × 0.954, i.e. a 4.6% drop is fatal. Every doubling of leverage halves your error budget.
Each symbol has its own tier table. BTCUSDT USDT-M perpetual, 2026:
| Notional (USDT) | Max Leverage | MMR | Maint. Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 – 50,000 | 125x | 0.40% | 0 |
| 50,000 – 500,000 | 100x | 0.50% | 50 |
| 500,000 – 5,000,000 | 50x | 1.00% | 2,550 |
| 5M – 20M | 20x | 2.50% | 77,550 |
| 20M – 50M | 10x | 5.00% | 577,550 |
| 50M – 100M | 5x | 10.00% | 3,077,550 |
| 100M+ | 3x | 12.50% | 5,577,550 |
Notes:
| Dimension | Isolated | Cross |
|---|---|---|
| Margin source | Only the margin assigned to that position | Entire account equity + other positions' unrealized PnL |
| Liquidation impact | Only that position, others untouched | May cascade into other positions |
| Top-up | Per-position add/withdraw | Transfer USDT to the futures wallet |
| Capital efficiency | Lower, each position locks independently | Higher, shared pool |
| Best for | Directional bets, strategy testing, high leverage | Hedged books, spread trades, experienced size |
Rule of thumb: isolated for bets, cross for books. If you do not hold a hedge against every position, stay isolated.
Binance does not market-dump at 100% instantly. The actual sequence:
Futures tab → Positions. Tap a position to see the live maintenance margin ratio and set price alerts.
GET /fapi/v2/account
# marginRatio e.g. "0.0234"
# maintMargin e.g. "72.00"
# totalMarginBalance e.g. "928.00"

Wrong. Leverage only controls how much IM you commit. Liquidation is driven by notional size. A 5,000 USDT position at 5x and the same at 20x share the same liq price.
No. USDT-M perps are non-recourse. Isolated loses only the isolated margin; cross caps at account equity. The Insurance Fund eats any shortfall.
Topping up is life support. If the market keeps moving against you, you will just feed money into a losing trade. Reduce the position instead.
No. 50% means MM is half of equity. You still have room, but half the buffer is gone.
It is a feature. Binance liquidates on mark price (multi-exchange spot index + fair funding basis) to prevent wick hunts. Last trade price only fills limit orders.
Tiered by notional. BTCUSDT starts at 0.4% and reaches 12.5% for mega positions. Altcoins usually start 1 – 2.5%. Always check the in-app tier table for the exact symbol.
100%. Isolated is per-position, cross is account-wide. Mark-price execution often hits a hair earlier than the theoretical level.
Isolated. Risk is sandboxed to one position. Cross is only for experienced traders running real hedges.
IM = entry cost = notional / leverage. MM = holding floor ≈ notional × MMR. The gap is your loss buffer.
UI position row, account panel, or API field marginRatio on GET /fapi/v2/account. Hook the WebSocket user stream for alerts.
In isolated, yes — but it is life support. Cutting size is the only real fix.
Binance partially liquidates oversized positions to de-risk the book before full clearance. You pay slippage but keep some exposure.
Yes: long liq ≈ entry × (1 − 1/L + MMR), short liq ≈ entry × (1 + 1/L − MMR). Percentages symmetric; absolute prices depend on entry.
