Binance Portfolio Margin (PM) — Complete Guide 2026

Last updated: 2026-04-17

Portfolio Margin (PM) is Binance's advanced margining mode for high-net-worth and professional traders. Instead of measuring risk one position at a time, PM combines your spot holdings, USDT-M futures, coin-M futures and options into a single portfolio and charges margin on the net portfolio risk. For market makers, hedgers and cross-product arbitrageurs, PM can free up 3× to 10× of the capital otherwise locked in isolated collateral buckets. This guide walks through eligibility, the step-by-step application, risk levels, the scenario-based margin engine, real-world strategies, fees and common pitfalls.

📖 Contents

1. What Portfolio Margin actually is

In traditional isolated or cross-margin modes, Binance treats every product in a silo — spot is spot, USDT-M futures is USDT-M futures, options is options. If you hold long BTC on spot and short BTCUSDT perpetuals to hedge, the two opposing legs look like independent risk to the system and you pay margin twice.

Portfolio Margin flips this upside down: opposite risks on the same underlying cancel each other out. PM maps every position in the account (spot BTC long, BTC perpetual short, BTC quarterly futures, BTC put options, etc.) onto a handful of risk dimensions — directional, volatility, basis and term-structure — and then runs a SPAN/TIMS-style scenario simulation to estimate the worst-case loss under extreme moves. That loss becomes your margin requirement.

For a genuinely delta-neutral book, the capital-efficiency boost is usually 3–10×.

Rule of thumb: directional punters don't need PM; hedgers, market makers and cross-product arbitrageurs absolutely do.

3. Eligibility & step-by-step application

3.1 Hard requirements

3.2 Step 1 — Consolidate assets

Log into BNApp or the web client and transfer everything scattered across spot, funding, futures and margin wallets into the USDT-M futures wallet. Non-stablecoin collateral (BTC, ETH) is accepted but haircut at 0.85–0.95.

3.3 Step 2 — Pass the risk quiz

Navigate to Account → Derivatives → Risk Assessment. Questions cover liquidation mechanics, funding rates, option Greeks and portfolio margin methodology. Read this guide first; don't guess.

3.4 Step 3 — Sign the PM agreement

Go to Account → Portfolio Margin and tick:

3.5 Step 4 — Close conflicting products

PM is incompatible with:

3.6 Step 5 — Submit & wait for review

Review typically takes 1–3 business days. Rejection reasons are explicit: not enough equity, not enough volume, failed quiz. Fix and re-apply.

3.7 Step 6 — Post-approval checklist

Once approved, the "PM" badge appears next to your account name. Immediately:

4. Risk levels & margin calculation logic

PM uses portfolio scenario simulation:

  1. Asset mapping: classify every position by underlying (BTC, ETH, SOL…);
  2. Price scenarios: ±15% shocks per asset, wider for extreme names;
  3. Volatility scenarios: ±40% IV shocks for options;
  4. Portfolio P&L: value the entire book under each scenario;
  5. Worst-case: the deepest loss becomes the Maintenance Margin (MM); Initial Margin ≈ MM × 1.25.

Risk-level ladder:

⚠️ PM liquidation is NOT per-position. It trims whichever leg most reduces aggregate portfolio risk, which can unwind your profitable hedge first and leave a naked directional bet behind.

5. Three classic PM use cases

5.1 Market making

MMs quote both sides and run close to delta-neutral. Under PM the same USDT supports bids and offers simultaneously, dramatically improving turnover. Binance VIP 9 MMs run on PM almost exclusively.

5.2 Hedging

Hold spot BTC long-term, short an equal size of BTCUSDT perps to hedge a short-term drawdown. In a normal account you pay margin twice; under PM the net delta is ~0 and you pay a small residual risk premium.

5.3 Basis / funding-rate arbitrage

Classic cash-and-carry: long spot + short quarterly futures, harvest the basis convergence. Under PM the two legs largely offset, so annualized returns on capital often exceed 30% versus 5–10% in an isolated account. Same math for funding-rate arb.

6. Seven common traps & risk warnings

  1. Auto-Borrow on by default — the account silently leverages up to plug margin gaps; turn it off unless you know what you're doing.
  2. Haircuts on non-stable collateral — BTC/ETH haircuts can tighten during volatile sessions, shrinking your equity mid-trade.
  3. Fake cross-asset hedges — long SOL spot vs. short BTC perps will NOT offset; PM only nets within the same underlying.
  4. Option gamma blow-ups — short-dated options near the strike blow gamma up, and PM responds instantly with a higher IM.
  5. Unpredictable liquidation path — the engine decides what to liquidate, not you. Keep a 20% buffer.
  6. Settlement-day cash flows — quarterly settlements and option expirations can crack an arbitrage structure open in a single print.
  7. API-key hygiene — PM keys have broader permissions; always IP-whitelist and disable withdrawal scope.

7. Fees, funding rates and hidden costs

PM doesn't charge a "platform fee", but be aware of:

Trading fees follow VIP tiers (VIP 1 spot maker 0.075%, futures maker 0.02%). Most PM traders are already VIP 3+, and with a referral code the effective cost drops another 20–30%. Register with code BNAPP for a lifetime 20% futures rebate.

8. FAQ

Q1. Can I disable PM later?
Yes. Close all futures/options positions, repay any borrow, then disable from Account Settings. You can re-enable anytime.

Q2. Is 100,000 USDT enough?
It's the minimum. For comfortable strategy execution, 200,000+ USDT is safer — otherwise a normal market move can push you into Level 2.

Q3. Does PM support spot margin trading?
Yes. Spot margin borrows are pulled into the portfolio risk calculation too.

Q4. Are PM and PM Pro the same?
No. PM Pro is an institutional tier with even more aggressive margining, typically requiring >1,000,000 USDT and dedicated onboarding.

Q5. Can I set liquidation alerts?
Yes. Turn on Margin Ratio alerts in BNApp at 70%, 85% and 95% via email and push — do this before you trade.

Q6. Can PM accounts use Binance Earn?
Most flexible products yes, locked/Dual-Investment no — those assets don't count toward available margin.

Q7. Which regions can't apply?
Retail users in the US, Ontario, Netherlands, Japan and Singapore face heavy restrictions. Always check Binance's compliance page for the current list.

Q8. Can I apply for PM inside BNApp?
Yes. The latest BNApp exposes PM under Account → Advanced Trading Modes. Register with code BNAPP to also unlock a 20% futures-fee rebate.
