Spot is "cash and carry"—you use USDT to buy real BTC, ETH and more. The coins enter your wallet and stay as long as you want. No leverage, no liquidation. If price drops, you still hold the coins; if it rises, you sell and take profit. This is the simplest and safest way to participate in crypto.
Example: You buy 0.02 BTC at $50,000 using 1000 USDT. Price rises to $60,000, you sell, take 200 USDT profit (before fees). Price drops to $40,000, you keep holding and wait for recovery. Your downside is bounded—the coin cannot owe you money.
Futures is "betting on price direction with margin"—you do not buy the actual coin, but open a "long" or "short" contract with collateral that amplifies your position. Binance USD-M futures support up to 125x leverage (new accounts default to 20x). 100 USDT of margin can control a 12,500 USDT notional position.
Example: 100 USDT margin, 10x leverage, long BTC. You control a 1000 USDT position. BTC +1% = +10 USDT. BTC -10% = liquidated, all margin gone. Leverage multiplies both profit and loss, and importantly, the loss.

Many think futures fees are expensive—actually per-trade futures fee is 5x lower than spot, but leverage amplifies the effective fee relative to margin.
The biggest spot risk is the coin going to zero (Luna, FTT type events). Mainstream coins (BTC/ETH/BNB) have extremely low zero probability—bear markets usually bottom at -70% to -85%. As long as you do not use leverage or borrow, you cannot be liquidated and can hold into the next bull market.
The risk in futures is forced liquidation—when margin ratio falls below maintenance, the system force-closes your position and your margin goes to zero.
2025 BTC fell from $73k to $49k (-33%):
Hold BTC spot long-term. Open small short futures when predicting short-term drops to hedge the drawdown. Example: hold 1 BTC spot, predict -10% drop, open 0.3 BTC short to partially hedge.
When perpetual funding rate is persistently positive (e.g., +0.03%/8h), "long spot + short futures" in equal size captures delta-neutral funding (~30%+ APR, no directional risk). Mind fees and net yield.
80% capital in spot DCA (BTC/ETH), 20% in small futures (≤5x) for short-term swings. Even if futures are wiped out, 80% spot survives.

Strongly recommend spot first. Get 3-6 months of practice with candles, order book, flow before touching futures. Leveraged futures amplify losses; beginners typically blow up within 14 days.
Futures per-trade is lower (0.02-0.05% vs 0.1%), but leverage amplifies effective fee on margin. BNAPP 20% rebate + BNB deduction reduce both further.
Spot cannot be liquidated; worst case is coin going to zero (Luna). Mainstream coins held long-term have tiny zero probability.
Perpetual futures settle funding every 8 hours. Positive = longs pay shorts; negative = opposite. Long-term positions must budget for funding cost (can be ±30% annualized).
Yes. Many mature traders use "spot HODL + futures hedge". See Advanced Strategies above.
USD-M BTCUSDT up to 125x, ETH up to 100x, majors 50-75x, altcoins 10-25x. New accounts cap at 20x, raised only after KYC + risk quiz. Avoid >10x.
Binance has ADL + insurance fund, usually you do not owe. Extreme events (2020-03-12) had socialized losses, extremely rare.
Binance spot does not support direct shorting (only via margin borrow). Use futures 1-3x for easy shorting.
Liquidation zeros only that position margin. Other USDT and all spot holdings are untouched. You can keep trading—cool down and review first.
Binance has built-in Demo Trading (switch at top of futures UI) with virtual USDT. Zero risk. Practice 1 month in demo before real money.
Spot and futures are both tools—neither is "better", only which fits you. If unsure, the answer is always: do spot first.
