Complete guide: how it works, setup steps, callback rate selection, mistakes to avoid
A trailing stop is an advanced order type that automatically moves your stop level in a favorable direction as price moves in your favor. Unlike a fixed stop loss, a trailing stop tracks the best price and only triggers when price reverses by a set percentage — called the callback rate.
In plain terms: your stop follows price higher as it rises; if price drops by your callback %, the stop triggers and exits the position. This lets you ride a trend while automatically locking in profit when the trend reverses.
You buy BTC at $80,000 and set a trailing stop with a 5% callback rate:
The stop line only moves in your favor — it never drops back down as price falls. Once triggered, the order executes at market price by default.
In the Binance app or web platform, navigate to your target spot pair (e.g., BTC/USDT).
Click the order type dropdown and select "Trailing Stop".
Enter your desired callback percentage (e.g., 3% or 5%). This is how far price must retrace from its peak to trigger the stop.
If you want the trailing stop to only begin tracking after price reaches a certain level, set an activation price. This prevents the stop from starting during sideways or downward movement.
Fill in the sell quantity and submit. The order appears in your open orders as "Trailing Stop — Pending Activation".
Futures trailing stops work the same way but include extra options:
Using Mark Price as the trigger is generally safer for futures — it avoids manipulation from short-term price spikes that can prematurely fire your stop.
The callback rate is the most critical parameter. Set it too tight and normal market noise triggers your stop. Set it too wide and you give back too much profit before exiting.
Pro approach: use the ATR (Average True Range) indicator. Set the callback to 1.5–2× the current ATR value for a data-driven, market-adaptive stop width.
A 1% callback on a coin with 3% daily range will trigger constantly on routine fluctuations. You get stopped out of good trades and pay unnecessary fees.
A trailing stop does not guarantee a profitable exit. If price drops immediately after entry, the stop fires below your entry price and you still lose. It is designed for positions that are already in profit.
Without an activation price, the trailing stop begins tracking immediately from submission — including during sideways or downward moves. Setting an activation price fixes this.
When a trailing stop triggers on a low-volume pair, the market execution can have severe slippage. Only use trailing stops on liquid trading pairs.
Use a regular stop loss to cap downside risk from entry. Use a trailing stop when you are already in profit and want to stay in the position as long as the trend continues.
Place two or three trailing stop orders at different callback rates to auto-scale out of a futures position in stages — say 30% at 3%, 40% at 5%, and 30% at 8%.
Before high-impact events (Fed announcements, major protocol upgrades), price often spikes both directions. Consider pausing trailing stops or widening the callback to avoid being stopped out on a wick that immediately reverses.
Set the callback rate so that the stop would activate near a structural support level. This aligns your technical analysis with your risk management.
